Comienza en la EICTV curso número diecinueve
El 5 de septiembre, a las 10:00 am exactamente, entró en marcha el curso número diecinueve de una Escuela en perenne renovación, tanto por el impresionante crecimiento de nuevos espacios e instalaciones, matrícula y programas incrementados, y el constante mejoramiento de los propósitos a más largo plazo. Luego de que el director, Julio García Espinosa le diera la bienvenida a los nuevos ingresos y a los continuantes, y les fuera presentado el cuerpo académico, administrativo y de producción, se procedió al tradicional riego de árboles, que simbolizan los Tres Mundos representados en este centro docente.
En sus palabras de bienvenida, García Espinosa explicó que esta Escuela se fundó como iniciativa del Comité de Cineastas de América Latina, patrocinada por el gobierno cubano y Gabriel García Márquez, con el fin de seguir los fundamentos del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano. Más adelante, aseguró que “esa herencia sustenta la EICTV, cuyo proyecto docente trata de no inclinarse a lo tecnocrático, sino a la utilización de la técnica como medio, y que la Escuela contribuya al desarrollo del talento, se convierta en un centro de energía creadora, y en un proyecto de vida”.
En la noche, se proyectaron las tesis audiovisuales del año anterior, además de otros trabajos de interés para toda la comunidad. El 9 de septiembre se puso en marcha también el estudio de televisión, donde se realizará un programa sobre la llegada de los estudiantes a la Escuela. A lo largo de toda la primera semana tendrán lugar exhibiciones y conferencias coordinadas por las cátedras de Humanidades y de Extensión Cultural.

Fernando Birri publica memorias y asiste a festival de Venecia
Fundador del movimiento del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano, el realizador, ensayista y poeta Fernando Birri (Santa Fé, Argentina, 1924) ha publicado la memoria del viaje que hizo por Suramérica cuando, en 1949, contaba con 24 años de edad, con el título de Memoria del andarín, un texto inédito que se publica por vez primera por la sevillana Mono Azul Editora.
Fernando Birri fue el primer director de la cubana Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión (EICTV) de San Antonio de los Baños, y cursó estudios de cinematografía en el Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografía de Roma, donde fue compañero de Gabriel García Márquez, Tomás Gutiérrez Alea y Néstor Almendros, además de ser fundador de la Fundación del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano y miembro de su consejo superior.
Fernando Birri, quien culmina la escritura de su libro con el aforismo “sólo hay una cosa tan linda como volver: irse”, además de caminar, empleó para su viaje todos los medios de transporte que tuvo a su alcance. El viaje partió de la provincia argentina de Santa Fé, para proseguir por las de Corrientes y el Chaco y recorrer el Paraguay en un recorrido de varios miles de kilómetros. La idea de Birri era remontar el río Paraná 'hasta los lejanos rumores de su origen' o, como escribe ya avanzado el viaje, hasta 'un Paraná encrespado y barroso, que me llama, alzando sus incansables brazos de espuma', en un periplo que le sirvió para escribir algunos poemas, que recoge este volumen junto a estas notas viajeras que nunca publicó y que ahora, a sus 81 años, ha entregado a la editorial sevillana.
Con motivo de la publicación de su Memoria del andarín, Birri ha señalado, en relación a la influencia de aquel viaje en su carrera posterior, que le aportó 'una de las tantas Américas de la América secreta; yo no sabía por aquel entonces que mi destino sería de cineasta; pero sí ya sabía que una imagen es una imagen, e intuía que la palabra es la palabra poética y sospechaba que un fotograma es un fotograma y otra cosa'.
Por otra parte, supimos por el propio Fernando que muy pronto estará aquí, en nuestra Escuela, luego de ser invitado por Fernando Solanas a la presentación en el Festival de Venecia de La dignidad de los nadies, el más reciente filme del propio Solanas, que este quiso dedicar particularmente a Birri, a modo de merecido homenaje.
La edad de la peseta concluye exitosamente su rodaje
En proceso de edición, a cargo del propio director Pavel Giroud y del también cineasta Lester Hamlet, se encuentra el nuevo largometraje de ficción cubano La edad de la peseta, coproducción entre Cuba (ICAIC), España (Programa Ibermedia, Televisión Española, MediaPro) y Venezuela (Alter Producciones) que lleva como guionista a Arturo Infante y en la dirección de fotografía a Luis Najmías, ambos egresados de la EICTV.
Además de la respetada actriz española Mercedes Sampietro, el filme es co-protagonizado por el niño cubano Iván Alberto Carreira, y también participan intérpretes como Susana Tejera, Carla Paneca, y el español José Ángel Egido, quien fuera premiado con el Goya al mejor actor revelación por Lunes al sol. En conferencia de prensa, la Sampietro explicó que trabajar en Cuba significaba el cumplimiento de un sueño largamente anhelado, aparte de que la historia y el personaje en sí, la fascinaron.
En la conferencia de prensa de presentación del rodaje, Lola Salvador, importante guionista española, productora ejecutiva del futuro filme y pedagoga asociada a la EICTV de manera sistemática, nombró “oficialmente” a Gabriel García Márquez padrino de este proyecto, en tanto el autor de Cien años de soledad se quedó fascinado con esta historia desde que Arturo Infante se la dio a conocer, en uno de los talleres de guión que tienen lugar anualmente aquí, en San Antonio de los Baños.
Se anuncia nuevas ediciones de festivales latinoamericanos de cine
El Comité Organizador del Festival Ícaro de Cine y Video, a celebrarse en Guatemala, y Casa Comal, se complacen en convocar a todos los productores, realizadores, técnicos y amantes de las artes visuales de Centro América a participar en su octava edición, d el 10 al 17 de noviembre. Podrán participar todos los realizadores centroamericanos en las siguientes categorías: largo y cortometraje de ficción, documental, nota periodística, reportaje, experimental, spot publicitario, video clip, animación, programa de TV, diseño electrónico. Los realizadores del resto del mundo pueden participar en las categorías de Mejor película Extranjera (documental, corto y largo de ficción). Más información en festivalicaro@casacomal.org.
Por tercer año consecutivo se desarrollará en Buenos Aires el Tercer Festival Internacional de Cine y Video Latinoamericano. En esta oportunidad se ha cursado invitación al realizador mexicano Jorge Fons, para compartir sus conocimientos y una retrospectiva de sus mejores obras. Como siempre contaremos con el auspicio y las charlas técnicas del Sindicato de la Industria Cinematográfica Argentina (SICA) y el apoyo incondicional del Instituto Nacional de Cine y Artes Audiovisuales (INCAA) así como también de otras empresas e instituciones relacionadas con la industria del cine.
La XV Muestra Nacional de Cine y Video Documental, Antropológico y Social tendrá lugar en Mendoza (Argentina), organizada por el Instituto Nacional de Antropología y Pensamiento Latinoamericano, de la Secretaría de Cultura de la Nación, en conjunto con la Facultad de Ciencias Políticas de la Universidad Nacional de Cuyo. Se realizará entre el 5 y el 8 de octubre. La Muestra viene reuniendo, desde 1991, las principales producciones fílmicas y en video que abordan estos temas, ya sean producciones nacionales o extranjeras. Las obras presentadas pasarán a formar parte de la Videoteca del Instituto Nacional de Antropología y Pensamiento Latinoamericano, el que se compromete a difundir el material con fines culturales.
El segundo Festival Nacional y Muestra Internacional de Cortometrajes, Cuzco-Perú 2005, organizado por la Asociación Cultural Delluc y la Universidad Nacional San Antonio Abad del Cuzco, se realizará del 17 al 19 de noviembre del 2005. Se competirá en las siguientes categorías: cortometrajes nacionales, audiovisual de estudiantes (a nivel nacional e internacional) y cortometrajes internacionales. Adicionalmente se realizarán talleres, conferencias, y mesas redondas sobre temas de cine y audiovisuales a cargo de especialistas nacionales e internacionales en la materia. El Festival de Bogotá, cuya próxima edición será en octubre (del 5 al 13), ha dado a conocer los cineastas noveles que participarán en su apartado competitivo, representando a 12 países, entre los cuales hay algunos latinoamericanos. De Argentina, están Tatuado, de Eduardo Raspo; Garua, de Gustavo Corrado, y Cómo pasan las horas, de Inés De Oliveira; de Colombia, Violeta de mil colores, de Harold Trompetero; de México, Matando cabos, de Alejandro Lozano, y Conejo en la luna, de Jorge Ramírez-Suárez, y de Cuba, Tres veces dos, de Pavel Giroud, Lester Hamlet y Esteban Insausti.
Continúan éxitos de la chilena Alicia Scherson y su filme Play
Con el aval de los premios en el festival neoyorquino Tribeca y en el de Montreal, se acaba de estrenar en Chile el filme titulado Play, primer largometraje de Alicia Scherson, egresada en la EICTV. El filme cuenta la historia de Cristina, una chica mapuche que trabaja en Santiago cuidando a un viejo enfermo. Un día encuentra en la basura el maletín de un joven arquitecto y se obsesiona con él. El hombre pasa por una crisis de pareja y deambula por Santiago seguido por Cristina.
Como este boletín dio cuenta del éxito en el festival neoyorquino, pero no en el Montreal, le contamos a quienes no lo sepan que en el XXIX Festival des Films du Monde, ganó el premio principal el film holandés Off Screen, de Pieter Kuijpers, mientras Kamataki, del cineasta local Claude Gagnon, fue la favorita del público, de la crítica y hasta del jurado ecuménico. En la sección latinoamericana fue recompensada con el Premio Glauber Rocha la cinta chileno-argentina Play.
Aplauden el primer filme anglosajón de Fernando Meirelles
Con muy escasas excepciones, la crítica norteamericana aplaudió el debut internacional de Fernando Meirelles, el brasileño que llamó la atención del mundo con su fuerte estilo visual y su ironía dramática en Ciudad de Dios, nominada a cuatro premios Oscar, y fotografiada brillantemente por César Charlone, fundador de la EICTV, y jefe de cátedra de fotografía. El nuevo filme de Meirelles se basa en una novela de John Le Carré, que mezcla una historia romántica con política, diplomacia, conspiración, corrupción y marginalidad en el tercer mundo.
La acción se desarrolla en el norte de Kenya, cuando aparece brutalmente asesinada una cooperante, la brillante y apasionada Tessa Quayle (Rachel Weisz), para desesperación de su esposo, el hasta ahora pasivo y poco ambicioso funcionario diplomático Justin Quayle (Ralph Fiennes). La crítica ha elogiado The Constant Gardener desde diferentes puntos de vista, como las actuaciones de Ralph Fiennes y Rachel Weisz, que algunos califican como las mejores de sus respectivas carreras; el ritmo y la tensión que Meirelles imprime a su narración, poco habitual en las previas adaptaciones del mismo autor al cine (como La casa Rusia o El sastre de Panamá), y también el guión de Jeffrey Caine.
Variety destaca la fidelidad al espíritu ético de la obra de Le Carré, que considera poco frecuente en una producción de estas características. En la misma línea, Hollywood Reporter subraya que la frecuente simplificación y pérdida de matices que ha sufrido el autor en la gran pantalla hacen del filme una feliz excepción. También se elogian los elementos técnicos, la fotografía de Cesar Charlone (que repite con Meirelles) y la banda sonora de estilo étnico que compuso el vasco Alberto Iglesias (el músico habitual de Julio Medem y de las últimas cintas de Almodóvar, quien también debuta en el cine anglosajón).
Viva Cuba fue presentada en Locarno y será propuesta al Oscar
Después del tremendo éxito de público y crítica conquistado nacionalmente por Viva Cuba, el segundo largometraje de ficción del director cubano Juan Carlos Cremata (egresado de la EICTV), la agencia IPS dio a conocer la intención del Instituto Cubano de Industria y Arte Cinematográficos (ICAIC) de proponer la película a consideración de la Academia norteamericana de cine, con vistas a que pueda competir por una de las candidaturas a los premios Oscar.
"Un Oscar no quiere decir absolutamente nada, nunca ha estado dentro de mi horizonte. Yo creo más en el premio que ofrecen esas salas llenas y los niños enamorados de la película", dijo a IPS el director de Viva Cuba. La coproducción entre la firma francesa Quad Productions y la entidad fílmica cubana TVC Productora, recibió este año el Grand Prix Ecrans Juniors del Festival de Cannes, que otorga un jurado compuesto por niños. La segunda película de Cremata participó en los festivales cinematográficos de Montreal y Toronto, en Canadá, y tomará parte en el Festival del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano de La Habana.
Antes de todo ello, ocurrió la presentación de Viva Cuba en la Kursaal, la sala más importante y antigua del Festival Internacional de Cine de Locarno, en Suiza, con la presencia de su director. Fue una proyección especial, fuera de concurso, pues el filme cubano había encontrado en Locarno un productor interesado que propició su realización y proyección internacional, cuando todavía se encontraba en la etapa de proyecto.
Debemos señalar que, dentro de este mismo Festival de Locarno, se presentó el filme soviético-cubano Soy Cuba, de Mijail Kalatozov, con la presencia de uno de sus creadores más importantes, el cineasta cubano Enrique Pineda Barnet, y este acontecimiento fue escoltado dignamente por la exhibición del largometraje documental, Soy Cuba: el mamut siberiano, del realizador brasileño Vicente Ferraz, egresado en la segunda generación.
Ruy Guerra adapta novela de García Márquez y concursa en San Sebastián
En la sección competitiva del 53 Festival Internacional de Cine de Donostia-San Sebastián se incluyó O veneno da madrugada, del veterano director brasileiro Ruy Guerra, fundador del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano y profesor ocasional de la EICTV.
O veneno da madrugada es la adaptación de una novela escrita por el Nobel colombiano Gabriel García Márquez, La mala hora, en la cual se narra la historia de dos familias enfrentadas que se disputan el poder, en una pequeña localidad, con la mediación interesada de representantes de la curia, del gobierno municipal y de la judicatura. Ruy Guerra se encargó de poner en imágenes otras narraciones garcíamarquianas como Eréndira (1982) y Fábula de la bella palomera (1988).
Por otro lado, se ha anunciado que el jurado oficial estará integrado por la actriz y directora norteamericana Angelica Huston (Presidenta), la actriz española Verónica Forqué, el escritor y cineasta chileno Antonio Skármeta, el actor italiano Enrico Lo Verso, el productor y realizador francés Claude Miller, la directora danesa Lone Scherfig, y el director artístico norteamericano Dean Tavoularis.
Vistas masivamente en Cuba Bailando chachachá y Hormigas en la boca
El ICAIC, como parte de la programación de cine en el verano, estrenó en salas de toda Cuba el largometraje de ficción Bailando chachachá, dirigido por Manuel Herrera, (jefe de cátedra de polivalencia en la EICTV), y con guión de Inti Herrera, también egresado de la Escuela. La película trata sobre tres jóvenes que intentan hacer despegar sus vidas, mientras una madre se empeña en vivir sus fantasías. La filmografía de Manuel Herrera cuenta con títulos como Girón, No hay sábado sin sol, Capablanca y Zafiros locura azul, entre otros.
Luego de Bailando Chachachá, entró en las carteleras cubanas de estreno Hormigas en la boca, dirigida por Mariano Barroso (quien fuera jefe de cátedra de dirección en la EICTV), y que fue rodada en Cuba, con el protagonismo de Jorge Perugorría y producida por Eduardo Campoy y Gerardo Herrero. Hormigas en la boca resultó ganadora del Premio Especial del Jurado en el Festival de Málaga.
Cantando bajo la tierra se estrenó en el habanero cine Chaplin
Escrito y dirigido por Rolando Pardo (actual vicedirector académico de la EICTV), Cantando bajo la tierra acaba de ser estrenado en el cine Charles Chaplin. Largometraje documental consagrado a cronicar penas, glorias y peripecias de los músicos ambulantes del metro de Madrid, esta obra contó con la producción de Pentagrama Films, la ECAM (Escuela de cine de Madrid) y la colaboración especial de la EICTV, que además participó con personal creativo como el propio director, Fabio Pallero (Jefe de cátedra de Edición), Jerónimo Labrada (Jefe de cátedra de Sonido) y la egresada en producción María José Diez, entre otros.
El periódico Juventud Rebelde afirmó que Cantando bajo la tierra “se ha construido como un musical asombrosamente polimórfico, testimonio atento a las realidades del exilio, la exclusión y el desempleo, mientras se accede a la intimidad, la historia personal y los sueños de auténticos creadores (…) Con toda su innegable penetración y fluidez, Rolando Pardo y sus lúcidos colaboradores (sobre todo en cuanto a fotografía, edición y sonido) apostaron por solazarse en la detallista, y magnífica, recreación de un cosmos subterráneo donde confluyen miríadas de universos existenciales, al tiempo que nos presentan, en sordina, como proveniente del subsuelo, la elocuente disertación sobre las diversas acepciones del triunfo y la derrota, expuesta al compás de todas las músicas del mundo”.
Nueva edición del Festival Cineplaza dedicado a Julio García Espinosa
Al fundador del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano, Premio Nacional de Cine 2004, y actual director de la EICTV, Julio García Espinosa, se dedica la edición número 25 del Festival Cineplaza. Convocan la Casa de Cultura de Calzada y 8, el Instituto Cubano de Industria Cinematográfica, el Centro Provincial de Cine de Ciudad de La Habana, y la Dirección Municipal de Cultura de Plaza de la Revolución. Esta edición se celebrará del 6 al 9 de Octubre, y además de consagrarse a homenajear a García Espinosa también será recordado el aniversario 50 del documental El Mégano, y el aniversario 45 de la Cinemateca de Cuba.
Podrán participar en Cineplaza todos los realizadores residentes en Cuba, profesionales o no, incluidos los estudiantes de los medios audiovisuales. Las obras competirán en las categorías de: ficción, documental, videoclip, videoarte, spot, guión inédito, cartel cinematográfico y animación, además de que también se conferirán premios en las especialidades de dirección, guión, edición, fotografía, diseño visual, Sonido, música original, actuación y dirección de arte. El plazo de admisión vence el 20 de septiembre del 2005.
La semilla que sembramos
* Felicitaciones a Benito Zambrano. Su Habana Blues ha sido seleccionada por la Academia Europea de Cine entre las candidatas a los premios European Film Awards 2005, que se entregarán el próximo mes de diciembre en Berlín. Habana Blues ha sido vista por más de 550.000 espectadores en España y próximamente se estrenará en más de 40 países donde ha sido vendida.
* Dos egresados, Micaela Cajahuaringa y Marcos Moura, son los felices progenitores de Manuela, que nació el 28 de agosto. Ese mismo día nació Laura Stefi, la hija de Jorge Molina, también egresado de la EICTV y actual responsable de Extensión Cultural.
* Reapareció vía correo Carlos Cibils (Café) después de muchos años sin saber de él. Trabaja en la empresa aérea Spacecam, y ha realizado numerosos comerciales, y también largometrajes.
* Fernando Timossi está preparando, en colaboración con el ICAIC, un proyecto sobre la vida y obra de Antonio Guiteras y Carlos Aponte.
* Invitado frecuente en todos los niveles pedagógicos de la EICTV, Miguel Littín volverá a estar entre nosotros, próximamente, para compartir la presentación del clásico El chacal de Nahueltoro.

Course number nineteen starts at the EICTV
September 5th, at sharply 10:00 am, marked the start of the nineteenth course of a School that is constantly renewing itself, both through the impressive growth of new spaces and facilities, the number of enrolees and curricula, and the permanent upgrading of its longer-term goals. After the Director General, Julio García Espinosa, delivered a welcoming speech to the freshmen and the sophomores and the faculty, the management and production staffs were introduced to them and the traditional ceremony of watering trees, symbolizing the Three Worlds represented in this School, took place.
In his speech, García Espinosa said that this School was founded as an initiative of the Committee of Latin American Filmmakers, sponsored by the Cuban government and Gabriel García Márquez, in order to follow the guidelines of the New Latin American Cinema. He later said that “this heritage supports the EICTV, whose teaching project tries not to tend to a technocratic approach, but instead to the use of technology as a means, so that the School could contribute to the development of talent and turn into a center of creative energy and a life-oriented project.”
In the evening the audiovisual theses made last year were screened, as well as other works that are of interest to the whole community. On September 9 th the television studio started to work and a show about the coming of the students to the School will be made there. In the first week exhibitions and lectures organized by the Humanities and Extracurricular activities departments will also take place.

Fernando Birri publishes memoirs and attends Venetian Festival
The filmmaker, essayist and poet Fernando Birri (Santa Fé, Argentina, 1924) a founder of the New Latin American Cinema movement, has published the memoirs of a journey that he made across South America in 1949, when he was 24 years old. The work, whose title is Memoria del andarín, is an unpublished text that is published for the first time by the Mono Azul Publishing House in Seville.
Fernando Birri was the first Director of the International School of Film and Television (EICTV) in San Antonio de los Baños (Cuba), attended film courses at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografía in Rome, where he was a classmate of Gabriel García Márquez, Tomás Gutiérrez Alea and Néstor Almendros, and was also a founder of the Foundation of the New Latin American Cinema and a member of its higher council.
Fernando Birri, who finishes his book with the aphorism “there is only one thing as beautiful as to come back: to leave”, in addition to walking, used all the means of transportation available to him. The journey started from the Argentinean province of Santa Fé, continued through the Corrientes and Chaco provinces and across Paraguay for some thousand kilometers. Birri’s idea was to go up Paraná river 'until the far rumors of its origin' or, as he writes when he is well into the journey, until 'a rough and muddy Paraná that calls me, rising its tireless foam arms', in a journey that he used to write several poems included in this volume together with the travel notes that he had never published, and now, when he is 81, has given to the publishing house in Seville.
In the occasion of the publication of his Memoria del andarín, Birri has pointed out, regarding the influence of that journey on his later career, that it provided him with 'one of the many Americas of the secret America; at that time I didn’t know that my destiny would be becoming a filmmaker, but I did knew that an image is an image, and I realized that the word is the poetic word, and suspected that a photogram is a photogram and not something else'.
On the other hand, we knew from Fernando himself that he will very soon be here in our School, after having been invited by Fernando Solanas to the presentation in the Venetian Festival of La dignidad de los nadies, the most recent film by Solanas that he wanted to dedicate particularly to Birri, as a deserved tribute.
The shooting of La edad de la peseta ends successfully
The new Cuban fiction feature film La edad de la peseta, a co-production between Cuba (ICAIC), Spain (Ibermedia Program, Televisión Española, MediaPro) and Venezuela (Alter Producciones), whose screenwriter is Arturo Infante and director of photography, Luis Najmías, both graduates from the EICTV, is now in the editing process under the supervision of the director Pavel Giraud and Lester Hamlet, also a filmmaker.
In addition to the prestigious Spanish actress Mercedes Sampietro, the Cuban boy Iván Alberto Carreira also stars. The cast includes Susana Tejera, Carla Paneca, and the Spaniard José Ángel Egido, who has been granted a Goya award to the best new actor for Lunes al sol. In a press conference, Sampietro said that working in Cuba means the coming true of a long-awaited dream, in addition to the fact that the story and the character fascinated her.
In a press conference held to present the shooting, Lola Salvador, an important Spanish screenwriter, executive producer of the film and frequent guest teacher at the EICTV “officially” appointed Gabriel García Márquez the Godfather of this project, since the author of Cien años de soledad was fascinated with this story when Arturo Infante let him know about it in one of the screenwriting workshops that take place every year here in San Antonio de los Baños.
New editions of Latin American film festivals are announced
The Organizing Committee of the Icaro Film and Video Festival to be held in Guatemala, and Casa Comal, are pleased to call all producers, filmmakers, technicians and lovers of the visual arts in Central America to participate in the eighth edition of this festival from November 10 th to 17 th. All Central American filmmakers are welcomed to participate in the following categories: fiction feature film and short film, documentary, journalistic note, reportage, experimental, advertising spot, video clip, animation, TV shows, electronic design. For the third consecutive year in Buenos Aires will take place the Third Latin American Film and Video International Festival. This time the Mexican filmmaker Jorge Fons has been invited to share his knowledge and a retrospective of his best works. As always, we will have the sponsorship and the technical talks by the Trade Union of the Argentinean Film Industry (SICA) and the unconditional support of the National Institute of Film and Visual Arts (INCAA) as well as of other enterprises and institutions related to the film industry.
The 15 th National Showcase of Documentary, Anthropological and Social Film and Video will take place in Mendoza (Argentina), organized by the National Institute of Anthropology and Latin American Thinking, and the Nation’s Department of Culture, together with the Political Science Department of the Cuyo National University. It will take place from October 5 th to 8 th . Since 1991, the showcase has been including the main film and video productions that approach these subjects, both domestic and foreign. The works submitted will be included in the Video Library of the National Institute of Anthropology and Latin American Thinking, which is committed to spread the materials with cultural purposes.
The Second National Festival and International Showcase of Short Films Cuzco-Perú 2005, organized by the Delluc Cultural Association and the National San Antonio Abad del Cuzco University, will take place from November 17 th to 19 th, 2005. The competition will include the following categories: domestic documentaries, student audiovisual (both domestic and international) and international short films. Workshops, lectures and round tables by domestic and international specialists on film and audiovisual subjects will also take place. The Bogotá Festival, whose next edition will take place in October (from 5th to 13th) has informed of the novel filmmakers that will participate in the competition area representing 12 countries, some Latin American ones among them. From Argentina, Tatuado by Eduardo Raspo; Garua by Gustavo Corrado, and Cómo pasan las horas by Inés De Oliveira; from Colombia, Violeta de mil colores by Harold Trompetero; from Mexico, Matando cabos by Alejandro Lozano, and Conejo en la luna by Jorge Ramírez-Suárez, and from Cuba, Tres veces dos by Pavel Giroud, Lester Hamlet and Esteban Insausti.
The success of the Chilean Alicia Scherson and her film Play continues
After the awards won at the Tribeca Festival in New York and the Montreal Festival, the film Play has just been released in Chile. It is the first feature film by Alicia Scherson, a graduate from the EICTV. The film tells the story of Cristina, a Mapuche girl who works in Santiago taking care of a sick old man. One day she finds in the garbage the briefcase of a young architect and gets obsessed about him. The man is in the middle of a marriage crisis and roams around Santiago, followed by Cristina.
Since this newsletter informed of the success at the New York festival, but not at the Montreal one, we tell whoever doesn’t know about it, that at the 29 th Festival des Films du Monde, the main award was granted to the Dutch film Off Screen by Pieter Kuijpers, whereas Kamatake by the local filmmaker Claude Gagnon was the favorite of the audience, the critics and even the ecumenical jury. The Chilean-Argentinean film Play was granted the Glauber Rocha Award at the Latin American section.
The first English-language film by Fernando Meirelles is greeted
With very rare exceptions, the American critics greeted the international debut of Fernando Meirelles, the Brazilian who drew the world’s attention with his strong visual style and dramatic irony in Ciudad de Dios, nominated to four Oscar awards, with a brilliant cinematography by Cesar Charlone, a founder of the EICTV and the head of the Cinematography Department. The new film by Meirelles is based on a novel by John Le Carré that mixes a romantic story with politics, diplomacy, conspiracy, corruption and marginality in the third world.
The film is set in northern Kenya, where a volunteer, the beautiful and passionate Tessa Quayle (Rachel Weisz) is brutally murdered, that makes her husband, the so far passive and little ambitious diplomatic official Justin Quayle (Ralph Fiennes) desperate. The critics have praised The Constant Gardener from different angles, as well as the performances by Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz, which some consider the best of their careers; the pace and the tension that Mireilles gives to his narrative, quite unusual in the previous adaptations of the same author to the screen (like The Russia House or The Panama Tailor) as well as the script by Jeffrey Caine.
Variety highlights the fidelity to the ethical spirit of Le Carré’s work, which it sees as not frequent in a production like this. Likewise, Hollywood Reporter points out that the frequent simplification and loss of nuances the author has suffered on the big screen turn this movie into a happy exception. The technical elements are also praised, the cinematography by Cesar Charlone (who works with Meirelles again) and the ethnic-style soundtrack by the Basque Alberto Iglesias (the usual Julio Medem’s and last Almodovar’s films’ musician, who is also making his debut in the English-speaking cinema).
Viva Cuba was presented in Locarno and will be proposed to the Oscar
After the big box-office and critics domestic success of Viva Cuba, the second fiction feature film by the Cuban director Juan Carlos Cremata (a graduate from the EICTV), the IPS agency informed that the Cuban Institute of Film Art and Industry (ICAIC) intends to present the film to the consideration of the American Film Academy, so that it could compete in one of the Oscar awards category.
”An Oscar means absolutely nothing; it has never been within my horizon. I rather believe in the award granted by the packed theaters and the children who love the film” told the director of Viva Cuba to IPS. This co-production between the French firm Quad Productions and the Cuban film entity TVC Predictor, won this year the Grand Prix Ecrans Juniors at Cannes Festival that is granted by a jury made of children. Cremata’s second film participated in the Montreal and Toronto film festivals, in Canada, and will take part in the New Latin American Film Festival in Havana.
Before all that, Viva Cuba was presented at the Kursaal, the most important and ancient theater of the International Film Festival in Locarno, Switzerland, in the presence of its director. It was a special screening, off-contest, because the Cuban film had found in Locarno an interested producer that facilitated its making and international screening when the film was still a project.
We should point out that at the Locarno Festival the Soviet-Cuban film Soy Cuba by Mikhail Kalatozov was presented in the presence of one of its most important creators, the Cuban filmmaker Enrique Pineda Barnet, and after the presentation the feature documentary Soy Cuba: el mamut transiberiano by the Brazilian filmmaker Vicente Ferraz, a second-generation graduate, was also screened.
Ruy Guerra adapts a novel by García Márquez and takes part in the contest at San Sebastián
The film O veneno da madrugada, by the veteran Brazilian director Ruy Guerra, a founder of the New Latin American Cinema and guest teacher at the EICTV, was included in the competition section of the 53 rd Donostia-San Sebastián International Film Festival.
O veneno da madrugada is the adaptation of a novel written by the Colombian Nobel-prize winner Gabriel García Márquez, La mala hora, which tells the story of two families fighting for power in a small town, with the self-interested mediation of members of the clergy, the municipal government and the courts. Ruy Guerra has put on the screen other stories by the same writer, like Eréndira (1982) and Fábula de la bella palomera (1988).
On the other hand, it has been announced that the official jury will include the American actress and director Angelica Huston (President), the Spanish actress Verónica Forqué, the Chilean writer and filmmaker Antonio Skármeta, the Italian actor Enrico Lo Verso, the French producer and filmmaker Claude Miller, the Danish director Lone Scherfig, and the American art director Dean Tavoularis.
Bailando chachachá and Hormigas en la boca are widely seen in Cuba
The ICAIC, as a part of the summer releases, showed in theaters all over Cuba the fiction feature film Bailando chachachá, directed by Manuel Herrera, (the Head of the Foundational-Studies Department of the EICTV), with a script by Inti Herrera, a graduate from the School. The film is about three young men that try to start living independently, whereas a mother strives to live her fantasies. Manuel Herrera’s filmography includes Girón, No hay sábado sin sol, Capablanca and Zafiros locura azul, among others.
After Bailando Chachachá, the Cuban theaters released Hormigas en la boca, directed by Mariano Barroso (who was the Head of the Directing Department of the EICTV), and shot in Cuba starring Jorge Perugorría, and produced by Eduardo Campoy and Gerardo Herrero. Hormigas en la boca won the Special Award of the Jury at the Malaga Festival.
Cantando bajo la tierra was released at the Chaplin theater in Havana
The film Cantando bajo la tierra, written and directed by Rolando Pardo (currently the vice academic director of the EICTV), has just been released at the Charles Chaplin movie theater. This work, a feature-length documentary that tells about the joys, the sorrows and the adventures of the traveling musicians of the Madrid’s subway, was produced by Pentagrama Films and the ECAM ( Madrid Film School). The film had the special collaboration of the EICTV, which participated with creative staff like the director himself, Fabio Pallero (the Head of the Editing Department), Jerónimo Labrada (the Head of the Sound Department) and the production graduate María José Diez, among others.
The Juventud Rebelde newspaper wrote: Cantando bajo la tierra “has been built as an astonishingly polymorphic musical, an attentive eyewitness report of the realities of exile, exclusion and unemployment while approaching the intimacy, the personal history and the dreams of true creators (…) With all his undeniable insight and fluidity, Rolando Pardo and his lucid collaborators (above all, as far as cinematography, editing and sound concerns) decided to enjoy the magnificent and detailed recreation of an underground cosmos where thousands of existential universes converge, quietly presenting to us, as it were coming from the subsoil, an eloquent dissertation about the different meanings of triumph and failure, exposed at the rhythm of all the music of the world.”
A new edition of the Cineplaza Festival is dedicated to Julio García Espinosa
The 25 th edition of the Cineplaza Festival is dedicated to the founder of the New Latin American Cinema, National Film Award 2004, and current Director of the EICTV, Julio García Espinosa. The organizers are the Calzada y 8 House of Culture, the Cuban Institute of Film Art and Industry, the Provincial Film Center of the City of Havana and the Plaza de la Revolucion Cultural Municipal Director’s Office. This edition will take place from October 6 th to 9 th and in addition to paying tribute to García Espinosa, the 50 th anniversary of the documentary El Mégano, and the 45 th anniversary of the Cuban Cinematheque will be remembered.
All filmmakers who reside in Cuba, professionals or not, including the audiovisual media students, can participate in Cineplaza. The works will compete in the categories: fiction, documentary, video clip, art video, spot, unpublished script, film poster and animation Awards will be also granted in the specialties of directing, screenwriting, editing, cinematography, visual design, sound, original music, acting and art direction. The submission deadline is September 20 th, 2005.
The seed we sow
* Congratulations to Benito Zambrano. His film Habana Blues has been selected by the European Academy of Cinema among the candidates to the prizes European Film Awards 2005, that will be giving next December in Berlin. Habana Blues has been seen for more than 550.000 spectators in Spain, and soon it will be shown in more than 40 countries where it has been sold.
* Two graduates, Micaela Cajahuaringa and Marcos Moura, are the happy parents of Manuela, who was born on August 28 th. The same day was born Laura Stefi, the daughter of Jorge Molina, also a graduate from the EICTV currently in charge of cultural extracurricular activities.
* Carlos Cibils (Café) reappeared via mail after many years with no information about him. He works at the Spacecam air enterprise and has made many commercials as well as feature films.
* Fernando Timossi is preparing, in collaboration with ICAIC, a project on the life and work of Antonio Guiteras and Carlos Aponte.
* Miguel Littín, who is a frequent guest at all teaching levels of the EICTV, will be among us again soon to share with us the presentation of the classic El chacal de Nahueltoro.
